What do you get when you combine a Newtown sidestreet shopfront, sugar, caffeine, Philippe Starck and the very talented Christopher Thé?
Black Star Pastry, of course. Just about everybody has heard of them now, and lucky for me, it’s just up the road. If you’re lucky to nab yourself a stool outside or the window seat, do yourself a favour and order one of the expertly-made gutsy coffees and one, two, or all of the tempting sugary creations on offer.

The dense and aromatic Persian fig & almond cake is out of this world. Stunning to look at with delicate dried flower petals and fig and superbly moist beneath with a hint of rosewater. The rose & lilac macaroon is crispy and light as it should be and a perfect compliment to the coffee these guys make so well.

For those of you with not much of a sweet tooth, of if you just don’t feel like having cake for lunch, the small chalk board offers savouries such as baguette sandwiches, quiches and pies. And yes, the bread is made here as well. You can even buy a soughdough to take home.
Coffee and pastry, anyone?
