Once upon a time this part of Waterloo was a bit of a no-go zone. I remember running around here as a kid, visiting my cousin back in the 70′s. Decrepid warehouses, delapidated terraces, you probably wouldn’t even want to park your car here. Then money moves into the neighbourhood. Money needs to decorate its apartment. Money needs pretty things for the courtyard. Money needs to stock its pantry with foods from far-away places. And money needs somewhere to eat. The fish ‘n chip shop up the road just didn’t cut it.

One of the early birds to this little Danks Street precinct is the aptly named Danks Street Depot. It hit it off at the start, everyone was talking about it and then in typical Sydney fashion the novelty died down to a simmer and you suddenly don’t need to queue for a table. Mr K. and I were checking out some potential outdoor flooring for the backyard at Eco Outdoor and needed some nourishment so seeing DSD is across the road we thought we’d stop in for a quick lunch.

We started with the two doorstop-sized wedges of fresh sourdough, coupled with grassy ex virg olive oil and balsamic. I’m a bit tired with the combining of balsamic and oil so it would have been nice to see them separated. Wonderful bread, though.
Next things to nibble on is the chickpea puree with flatbread. Quite nice. The winner of the table, however, was the toasted reuben sandwich. A wickedly delicious artery-clogging sambo generously filled with corned Wagyu beef, oozing cheese, sauerkraut and a big splodge of seeded mustard. Even at a high cholesterol $18 it’s worth it.

The slow cooked broccoli and eggs sounded somewhat better on paper than it did in person. The simple arrangement of sourdough toast topped with lovely scrambled eggs topped with a great piece of cold broccoli was a little odd at first but what threw the whole dish out was the broccoli itself. Slightly warm or room temperature would have worked but the grey-green lump of fridge-cold vegetable (cooked in white wine) was overcooked and rather flavourless other than a slight hint of chilli. Liked the goat’s fetta, though.

I think next time we come here I may have a hard time ordering something other than the Reuben. Now that’s my kind of sandwich.
