The evolution of Pyrmont since the closure of the CSR sugar refinery has been a gradual one and in the space of a decade the population has increased significantly with the construction of many apartment and office buildings. Restaurants have come and gone and one of these newcomers, The Terrace Thai, has bravely taken floorspace under an office building above the Fish Market tram stop. Located a few blocks down from the peninsula’s main drag, Harris Street, this restaurant is beautifully decorated in a meld of contemporary asian meets Aussie beach house. It definitely caught my attention when I got off the tram to go to the Fish Market.

The eateries at the Fish Market never seem to get me overly excited as I’m not a big fan of greasy fish and chips and calamari rings. Yes, there is more food there but I just wasn’t in the mood for it and the swarms of tourists were driving me a little batty.
To start we get a plate of Pandan chicken. I’ve always liked the look of this dish and enjoy the theatrical unwrapping of the cocooned marinated and fried chicken. Sadly it’s a little overcooked and slightly dry but I’ve loving the sticky and syrupy sweet tamarind dipping sauce.

Predictably Mr K goes for the Duck salad – shredded roasted duck meat with coconut milk, chilli jam, lemongrass, ribbons of cucumber, red onion and lime dressing. It’s a perfect dish for a hot summer’s day and I’m loving the fact that I always end up with the crispy skin. Very nice.

The predictability continues with me getting the Braised pork belly. How could I not when it is braised in sweet soy, cinnamon, star anise and wilted bok choy? The delicious flavours seem to lean towards Chinese but I’m not perturbed as the richly-flavoured pork chunks are tender as they should be and laced with the perfect amount of fat. The two juicy shiitake mushrooms go beautifully with the overall dish.
Having only three dishes is not enough for me to question the authenticity of the food (though it so far seems to lean towards being a bit anglicized) but what I can say is that it’s well-made and generously-sized. The location may be a bit of an issue seeing they overlook a freeway overpass but if you ignore the concrete you have a nice view over Blackwattle Bay.

I’ve not visited yet, but some friends that live nearby have recommended it.
I worry about the location, I’m not sure I see them lasting long, but I hope I’m wrong.
This place looks so beautiful- I would come here just to sit and look at the decorations! Must remember to come here next time I visit the Fish Markets- I don’t really like eating at the fish markets either but it’s more because it’s too hard to find a place to sit! The pandan chicken looks really good!
Good looking pork belly. Yum.
Awesome food, great decor and atmosphere. Excellent value for money, but a little tricky to find in my opinion (though the food definitely makes it worth looking for!)
Looks really good! Do you know if they do BYO and take group booking?
And is there a menu picture? I can’t seem to find one online.
Cheers
Hi Lucy, I think if you call the restaurant you’ll have your questions answered
Great food (try the soft shell crab). Great service. Great prices (lunch time menu is worth a try – great Chicken Pad Thai for $9.80). Great location (OK, I live opposite the restaurant in Miller Street). I hope that everybody takes the trouble to find The Terrace so that I can continue to have my favourite Thai restaurant so close to home.
