One of the things I love about living in this town is the abundance of great markets. I don’t mean the highly touristed Rocks Market with its saturation of Australiana crafts (though I do love that fudge stand with its richly decadent sweets) or the somewhat high-brow Paddington Market crawling with wannabe glamour girls and boys with blotchy spray-on tans and designer garb.
I’m talking food markets. Artisan breads, imperfect-looking carrots and meats raised and produced with time and care. Stuff you won’t find at Coles or Woolies. One of my favourites is (unfortunately) only held on the first Saturday of every month.
Located in Pyrmont Bay Park in the shadow of our hideous Star City Casino, the 80-odd stalls at the Sydney Morning Herald Growers’ Market have a great selection of fresh fruit and veg, colourful flowers, meats, baked goods, coffee, preserves, olive oil, you name it. The location is perfect. The tented stalls hug the edge of the park and harbourside boardwalk and the central grassed area is buzzing with people sitting and eating, walking their dogs or just playing with their highly-energized offspring. There’s even the occasional cooking demo.
Here’s a selection of stall-holders that grabbed my attention.

I’m so gutted I missed out on this market, again! I did make it to Glebe Market on Saturday which was OK but not a food market at all!
I must admit I’ve only been to the Fish Market so far in Sydney but next Saturday I’m off to Eveleigh, can’t wait already!
i’ve never managed to wake up early enough to get to these markets. i love the eveleigh farmers markets. and it’s open until a bit later which makes it more achievable for me to get to before it closes because i’m a morning sleepy head
Oh, blasted weather reports! They said it was going to rain on Saturday, so I decided not to go to the Pyrmont markets – wrong! It’s a great market, so nicely set out, though the queues at the coffee stands can be a bit long.
I think that Eveleigh markets are a good alternative because they are on every Saturday.

Your post reminds me that I should visit the Pyrmont market after missing out for many months. It’s a great market, but parking is such a pain
My favourite market is the Sydney Flemington market for fresh produce. And the biannual Flinder Keepers for an arty fix.
…@ Mike … I reckon you’ll like the Eveleigh Market
@ Simon … what are you like?! Mr Sleep-head
@ Belle … I thought it would rain as well but I had to go as I’d not been for years
@ Foodwink … I’ve never been to Flemington Mkt, will have to get out there one day
LOVE The Markets early.
