It never ceases to surprise me how most of us take for granted the things we have in our own backyards. You know it’s there, you’ve see it countless times and yet you’ve never quite stopped to give it a go. One such place is a mere five minutes walk from my house, a place that has been in business for almost a year and a place I discovered serves up American baked goodies for all to enjoy. I swear I walk around with horse blinkers on some of the time.

The “let’s go out for a coffee” has become a bit of a ritual of late, a ritual I seldom turn down knowing that there’s some fairly decent coffee to be had within a 1 kilometre radius of our house. But when the question “let’s try somewhere different” arises I can’t help but feel a bit nervous as there’s a great deal of cluelessness involved in this town when it comes to a well made coffee from an espresso machine. This was not the case when we took a seat in the comfortable little Buppa’s Bakehouse just up the road on King Street. Nothing clueless here. Not only is the coffee quite decent and the service friendly and accommodating but the selection of yankie-style cakes is thorough and drool-worthy with sticky, creamy and sugary goodness. Angel Food Cake, Pecan Pie, Peanut Butter Cookies, Mississippi Mud Cake, Ben & Jerry’s Icecream, real Bagels with cream cheese, it’s all here.

The one thing that caught my attention was the colourful and all-American Red Velvet Cupcake with its crown of red, white and blue cream cheese icing and patriotic stars and stripes flag. Tack-o-rama to some and a little out of place in downtown Newtown, this little cake is donned as such in honour of Independence Day, 4th July. I’ve always wanted to try a red velvet cake and this, my first time, was a very dry and crumbly affair that heavily relied on the cream cheese icing and a good sip of coffee to get it down.

Not the end of the world. There are plenty more cakes to try here at Buppa’s.

I’ve heard of this place! Worth adding on to our Newtown suburb tour list, perhaps?

I think the cupcake is so cute but then again I love American things. The cookies are to die for, especially the credit crunch cookie if that is available. I think she changes around things quite a lot though!

Too bad it didn’t taste that great – but it does look very colorful – maybe it was old stock?

VERY sad to report that Buppa’s has now closed. As a Newtown local, I was gutted. I’m told she intended still selling wholesale to some cafes and restaurants, but the marvelous Buppa’s Bakehouse cafe is no more.
