My parents moved from former Yugoslavia to Australia in 1968, pregnant with my older sister and not speaking a word of English. Next to no money, no jobs, no home. You can only imagine how terrifying that would be. Growing up in the 1970's I only wanted to "fit in" with all of the "Aussie" kids, speak the language, eat the food ... look and sound like them. As much as my heritage felt normal there was a part of me that rebelled against it, mainly through my teens, until life and experiences made me realise how proud and grateful I am for my parents decision to start a life in Australia. It may have taken 40 years but the passion for my Croatian heritage is the strongest it's ever been.
To celebrate the wonderful and diverse cuisine of Croatia, I'm gradually compiling some wonderful recipes I've cooked from my parents home country. The ones I grew up on and some I create myself. I hope you take the time to give some of them a go.
Do you have a Croatian recipe you'd like to see me recreate and feature on this site? Just contact me with your recipe and I'll see what I can do.
