Well it looks as if the once dismal cafe scene on Illawarra Road is on the up thanks to Cornersmith opening (earlier this year?) and this joint, Vesbar Espresso, opening its doors just last week. Melbourne boy Aki Daikos and his mate Danny Magliveras have set up shop across the road from the train station, pumping out Campos coffee and a selection of tasty tidbits to the locals and Erko blow-ins like me. Edibles like salads, arancini, bruschetta varieties and antipasto.
Get the drift with the food? Yes, there’s a bit of a Mediterranean thing going on, but hey, we’re in Marrickville after all. As tempting as the breakfast panini was in the cabinet; think bacon & egg, poached eggs with San Daniele prosciutto & tomato chutney or egg, bacon & hollandaise, I went with something I ate quite a bit of whilst travelling through Turkey and the Middle East a decade ago. The good old Mediterranean breakfast (15). Great to see these guys doing it. A large wooden board spread with tomato and cucumber, soft poached eggs, olive toast, oregano-sprinkled Persian fetta, olives and yoghurt. The macchiato and flat white I had were well made, satisfying my addiction nicely.
Good to hear Marrickville council did away with charging businesses a fee for putting chairs and tables on the footpath. Looks like we’ll be seeing less milk crates and more real seating in the suburb from now on.
